Walker Course at Clemson University

Located in upstate South Carolina, Clemson University's Walker Course represents a worthwhile diversion for golfers passing through the region. Clemson's campus is close to an hour drive from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), and easily accessible by car.

Designed by DJ DeVictor, the course is home to the Clemson Men's and Women's golf teams. As one might expect, the practice facilities are expansive and well-maintained. The short-game area features multiple greens and bunkers. The driving range provides ample space for student athletes and visitors. The clubhouse is clean and functional, providing a full service dining area and a pro shop stocked with Clemson Golf gear. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the Walker Course beyond the actual golf course is the pro shop staff. Courteous, professional, and flexible, the staff ensure patrons experience the Walker Course without hassle. A large conference center sits adjacent to the course, which offers corporate visitors the chance to mix meeting times with tee times.

Visitors to the Walker Course will find the layout and conditions well-worth the reasonable greens fees. Even in the middle of the summer season, the course remained in excellent shape. Summer rains nourish the fairways and greens, producing different shades of green throughout the course. The front nine heads out into woodlands, returning near the clubhouse in a simple loop. The back nine courses in the opposite direction, with the final few holes finishing along Hartwell Lake.

The course is appropriately challenging for golfers of various skill levels. Forced caries from the back tees, coupled with elevated greens, call for appropriate control of the golf ball from tee to green. Most greens are protected by bunkers. Once on the greens, players must remain aware of changes in elevation and grain. The greens are one of the course's primary defenses- quick, firm, and with significant undulations. Any first time player to the course will find time spent on the practice green to be time well-spent prior to the first tee.

The course is certainly walkable, but recreational players may appreciate a cart with the elevation changes. Most shots are completely visible from the fairways, but errant tee shots may require appropriate surveying prior to committing to a target. The rough is dense, but mown to a playable level.

In summary, the Walker Course at Clemson represents an excellent option for golfers in South Carolina. The course's courteous staff, superb condition, and elevation changes provide players a memorable experience.
